Last month, I participated in a Writers Victoria April Flash Fiction competition.

“30 days. 30 prompts. 30 words.  #WVFlashFic22”

The premise: before midnight, submit a story (up to 30 words) inspired by and using the daily prompt word.

2022 was the fourth year that Writers Victoria has run the competition, using the Twitter platform.  The theme this year was ‘glimmer’.  Judges chose a daily winner and one overall winner for the month.

I only discovered this competition part way through the month, so I didn’t enter every day.  I really enjoyed creating my stories and reading the many, many entries on Twitter.  So many different styles. Creativity was bubbling!  The support from fellow participants was very encouraging.

My submission that earned the most Twitter likes was in response to the prompt word ‘glimmer’:

The faintest glow kissed the clouds behind the silhouetted trees. Hinting, teasing. A glimmer then a flare, as the brilliant majesty of the rising lunar orb burst forth.

I think my favourite, for the prompt word ‘hope’, was:

Cowering in the shadows behind the dank, salt-encrusted chest, I was well within his foul reach. I hoped his gaze would be drawn to the flickering flame behind the windowpane.

If you are interested, you can:

– read all the entries on Twitter #WVFlashFic22

– read the winning stories published on the Writers Victoria website

– read my entries on Twitter

– join in yourself, in April 2023.  I recommend it as a valuable experience!
